Things We’ve Done

I’m learning how to be a shadow.

For the past two weeks we have included basic Montessori Activities in most of our days work. From math & counting to moveable letters used with the Association Method, we have found a way to blend it in.  I know I am not following the program but rather getting the kids used to the materials & learning how to sit still to learn them.  Math has been great & the visuals have helped both Maggie & Lily.

Science has never been a subject we’ve touched much up on mainly because I thought reading & writing were more important & math.  I’ve learned otherwise.  Science & nature are very important & important to expose the kids to it as early as possible as we have.  But now it’s time for small explanations.  Like the earth is made up of land & water. And this will teach them to appreciate where they live & pay attention to the natural world around them.

Some of our activities have focused on simple things like color.  Mostly matching & grading color.

We have also been working with paper & scissor skills although Lily has not worked as much with cutting. She runs with the scissors right now but sometimes sits in place to cut.

We have additionally been working on science themes.  I started out with things like rocks, minerals & gems. Without going into too much detail with each I explained differences between them & we weighed them on scales with some wooden blocks as objects of comparison.  I laid them out on sand which gave them subtle clues to how rocks were formed from things like sand.
